China stresses diplomacy over Iran’s nuclear program

7 Sep 2013 - 7:43

China has stressed the need for a peaceful resolution of the West's standoff with Iran over Tehran’s nuclear energy program, reaffirming Beijing’s opposition to the use of coercive measures against Tehran.
“... all parties should adhere to the efforts to maintain and promote the process of dialog and to find negotiated and appropriate“ settlement to the dispute, Wang Min, China's deputy permanent representative to the UN said at a Security Council meeting on Thursday.
He reiterated that a peaceful solution is the “only correct and viable path” to settle the issue.
China is always opposed to the use or threat of use of force, excessive pressure and new sanction measures against Iran, Wang said.

He added that Beijing “will continue to work with all sides to seek settlement of the issue through diplomatic means.”

The United States, Israel and some of their allies have repeatedly accused Iran of pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the US and European Union using the claim as an excuse to impose illegal sanctions against Tehran.

Iran has categorically rejected the allegation, stressing that as a committed member of the International Atomic Energy Agency and a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty, it is entitled to develop nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.

In addition, the IAEA has conducted numerous inspections of Iran's nuclear facilities, but has never found any evidence which shows Iran's civilian nuclear program has been diverted to nuclear weapons production.
