TEHRAN (FNA)- Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida in a message to his Iranian counterpart Mohammad Javad Zarif called on Tehran and Tokyo to further enhance bilateral relations.


In his message, Kishida congratulated Zarif on his appointment as Iran’s new foreign minister. The Japanese foreign minister hoped success for Zarif and also wished prosperity for the Iranian nation.

Kishida pointed to the friendly relations between Tokyo and Tehran and also exchanges of visits by the two countries’ officials, and asked for the further expansion of mutual cooperation between the two countries.

The Japanese foreign minister underlined that his country deeply wishes for Iran’s greater role in the region.

Kishida pointed to Zarif’s experiences on the international scene, and expressed the hope that constructive cooperation between Iran and the international community would further consolidate.

Tehran and Tokyo have always had warmed relations. Earlier this year, Secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council (SNSC) Saeed Jalili and Japanese Deputy Foreign Minister Akitaka Saiki in a meeting in Tehran explored avenues for the further expansion of the relations between the two nations.

During the meeting, Jalili lauded the close ties between the two countries, and stated that the long-standing friendship of Iran and Japan should be enhanced.

He further said that the Islamic Republic has made great strides in science and technology through defending its rights and maintaining its national interests.

Japanese diplomat, too, described Tehran-Tokyo relations as "historical and cordial", and said increased bilateral cooperation would serve the interests of the two countries.

Diplomatic relations between Iran and Japan were formally established in 1926 and throughout history, the two countries have maintained a friendly and strongly cooperation in various arenas.

The two countries' officials have held talks in different economic, trade, political and cultural fields in recent years to explore new ways of expanding bilateral ties.
