Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai has fired the country’s attorney general for holding a secret meeting with members of the Taliban militant group in the United Arab Emirates, a report says.
Citing senior Afghan officials, Reuters reported on Monday that Attorney General Muhammad Isaaq Aloko was sacked after he met members of a ‘Taliban peace negotiation team’ in Dubai despite being told by the Afghan Presidential Palace not to attend the meeting.

“He was instructed not to go,” a senior Afghan official said on condition of anonymity.

A prominent member of the Afghan parliament has also confirmed the report.

Meanwhile, Aloko’s office has rejected the dismissal of the Afghan attorney general, stating that he was at the Afghan Presidential Palace celebrating Independence Day on Monday.

Aloko has served as attorney general since 2008.

The meeting in the United Arab Emirates, which was held in the first week of August, was also attended by other prominent Afghan figures including members of the government’s High Peace Council, set up in 2010.

Talks between the Afghan government and the Taliban began in 2010. However, the negotiations have been marked by a series of delays.
