US-Israeli plot seek to trigger civil war in Egypt: Iranian MP

18 Aug 2013 - 16:30

Senior Iranian lawmaker Mohammad Hassan Asafari has warned of a US-Israeli plot which seeks to trigger Syria-style civil war and violence in Egypt.
“An American-Zionist plot seeks to plunge [Egypt’s capital] Cairo into civil war and massacre of people like [in Syria’s capital] Damascus,” Asafari said on Sunday.

“Given the fact that the US was opposed to the Islamic Awakening movement since the very beginning, it seeks to stifle [the movement],” the Iranian lawmaker added.

Asafari warned the Egyptian groups against such plots, advising the country’s army not to open fire at people.

“The Egyptian army should not burn its bridges by imprudent actions,” Asafari sad.

The Iranian lawmaker stated that certain parties are trying to exploit widening division caused by massive protests in the country.

On Friday, tens of thousands of people took to the streets across Egypt in response to a call by the Muslim Brotherhood for nationwide protests against the army and its handpicked government.

The Egyptian government has been intensifying its crackdown on the supporters of Egypt’s ousted President Mohamed Morsi whom the military removed on July 3.

The Interior Ministry said in a statement on Saturday that police had arrested more than 1,000 Muslim Brotherhood figures following the bloody clashes on Friday.

Over 170 people, most of them pro-Morsi protesters, have been killed since Friday in nationwide rallies across the country.

Egypt has been gripped by a bloody violence since Morsi’s ouster by the army. The interim government in Egypt has been facing international condemnation over the killing of protesters. Amnesty International has called for a thorough and unbiased investigation into the August 14 massacre.
