TEHRAN (FNA)- A plot by the armed rebels to assassinate Syrian Minister of Social Affairs Kinda al-Shammat in the old district of the capital Damascus has failed, local sources said.


Speaking to FNA in Damascus, local sources pointed to the explosion of a bomb-laden car in al-Bazuriya historical district of Damascus city on Saturday, saying, “Shammat’s convoy passed through al-Bazuriya just few minutes after the explosion and he was probably the target of an assassination attempt.”

More than 18 Syrian civilians were injured in the Saturday explosion in al-Bazuriya historical district near Madhat Pasha market in old Damascus city.

Last month, a Syrian deputy labor minister was wounded in an explosion in Damascus.

In the framework of targeting the national cadres, rebels detonated an explosive device attached to the car of Assistant Minister of Labor Rakan Ibrahim in Zukak al-Jin in al-Baramkeh area in Damascus in July.

A police command source in the province said that the terrorist act caused the injury of Ibrahim who was admitted to the hospital and material damage to the car.

Syria has been experiencing unrest since March 2011 with organized attacks by well-armed gangs against the Syrian armed forces and people being reported across the country.

Tens of thousands of people, including members of the security forces, have been killed ever since protest rallies turned into armed clashes.

The government blames outlaws, saboteurs, and armed terrorist groups for the deaths, stressing that the unrest is being orchestrated from abroad.
