Aoun says to propose draft to resolve Syrian refugee crisis

11 Aug 2013 - 14:35

BEIRUT: MP Michel Aoun said over the weekend his bloc would propose a draft law to address the growing problem of Syrian refugees, saying Damascus would ensure their safety once they return.
"I am warning against the dangerous repercussions from the [presence] of Syrian refugees, particularly as the winter season approaches,” Aoun told a crowd of his supporters and religious figures at the Greek Catholic Diocese in Zahle, east Lebanon, Saturday.

"The change and reform bloc will propose a draft law to address this issue next week,” he said.

“I have been in contact with Syrian National Reconciliation Minister Ali Haidar, who revealed the Syrian government's readiness to bring back the refugees to their villages and ensure their safety as well as issue a pardon for those who were involved in the fighting,” Aoun added.

Aoun, who has a number of ministers in caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikat’s resigned government, also apologized for the Cabinet’s incompetence in dealing with the growing number of Syrian refugees.

The FPM chief said his visit to Zahle was aimed at meeting with the town’s figures and his supporters as well as listening to their issues.

Bishop Issam Darwish thanked the head of the Free Patriotic Movement for his visit, asking him to look into constructing a road that would link Zahle with the Metn region.
