Iran, Russia stress peaceful resolution of crisis in Egypt

8 Aug 2013 - 17:59

Iran and Russia have underlined the necessity of finding a peaceful solution to the ongoing political crisis in Egypt.
During a Wednesday meeting in Moscow, Iranian Ambassador to Russia Reza Sajjadi discussed the latest developments in Egypt with Russian President Vladimir Putin's Special Envoy for Middle East Mikhail Bogdanov.

The two sides emphasized that the political crisis facing Egypt should be resolved through national dialogue without recourse to violence.

Sajjadi and Bogdanov also exchanged views on important issues related to Middle East and North Africa.

On the same day, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov expressed concern over the situation in Egypt, calling on the international community to encourage political forces in the North African country to reach national reconciliation.
The world community “should encourage Egypt to convince it to work out agreements, which would ensure equal rights for political, ethnic and religious groups of the population. There is no other way,” Lavrov said.
On July 23, Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi also expressed hope that all the parties involved in the Egyptian conflict can take steps toward the strengthening of the country’s national unity through convergence.

Tension has intensified in the Arab country since July 3 when the Egyptian army removed former President Mohamed Morsi from office. The army also suspended the constitution and dissolved the parliament.

Hundreds of protesters, mostly Morsi’s supporters, have been killed or wounded during the violence that broke out after the overthrow.
