Islamic shrines come under bomb attack in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula

5 Aug 2013 - 13:04

Unknown militants have carried out bomb attacks at two Islamic shrines in Egypt’s Sinai Peninsula, causing serious damage, a report says.
The state news agency MENA said that the militants on Sunday targeted the shrines near the North Sinai town of Bir el-Abd and the area of el-Maghara farther south.

“Both (shrines) were badly damaged,” the report said.

In another incident on the same day, one police officer was injured during a militant attack on a police club in the Sinai Peninsula’s El-Arish.

Extremist militants have stepped up attacks against security forces and other targets in Sinai since early July, when the Egyptian army ousted President Mohamed Morsi.

Several people have been killed during the clashes between militants and the Egyptian army in the Sinai region.
