‘US sanctions on medicine supply to Iran a historic crime’

The Iran Project - According to a senior Iranian businessman, US sanctions significantly impact Iran's access to medicine supplies, which he considers a "historic crime."

Sharif Nezam Mafi, who has trade activities in Switzerland, stated that international legal entities should hold accountable those responsible for hindering Iranian cancer patients' access to necessary drugs.

He emphasized that despite the US claiming that humanitarian goods like medicine are not sanctioned, many foreign banks refuse to work with pharmaceutical companies, effectively imposing sanctions on medicine.

Nezam Mafi noted that only a few Swiss companies have managed to continue working with Iran since 2018 when US sanctions were imposed.

European pharmaceutical companies have also been hesitant to engage in medicine trade with Iran due to fears of repercussions from US sanctions.

Iranian authorities have repeatedly blamed the shortage of medicines for diseases like cancer and epilepsy on US sanctions, and health experts warn that the situation may worsen in the future.

The secretary of Iran’s Strategic Council of Foreign Relations slammed the US lies about exempting medicines from anti-Iran sanctions, saying Washington’s “empty claims” are an example of its hypocrisy.

Talking at a recent summit of the Iran Hemophilia Center, Abbas Araqchi, lamented the hurdles created by the US Treasury Department in Iran’s purchase of medical items.

He complained that the heavy costs of hiring lawyers familiar with US sanctions laws discourage pharmaceutical companies from doing business with Iran.

Washington reinstated its sanctions against Iran in May 2018 after leaving a United Nations-endorsed nuclear agreement with the Islamic Republic and five other countries. It claimed that humanitarian supplies are officially exempted from the restrictive measures.
