UN envoy rejects report on release of Iranian inmates in US

3 May 2021 - 15:19

Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations said he would not confirm reports that Iranian prisoners in the US were going to be freed as part of an agreement.

Iran’s UN envoy, Majid Takht Ravanchi, said on Sunday that the reports about a prisoner swap deal with the US could not be confirmed.

He noted that Iran has always insisted on a comprehensive prisoner exchange with the US.

His comments came after Lebanese news network Al Mayadeen reported that Iran has agreed to release four Americans accused of spying for the CIA. In exchange, Washington will release four detained Iranians, in addition to unfreezing $7 billion of Iranian assets in the US.

The US also denied the report. State Department spokesman Ned Price said, “Reports that a prisoner swap deal has been reached (with Iran) are not true.”
