The deputy foreign ministers of Iran and Afghanistan pledged to expand bilateral relations between the two nations and vowed to prevent any threat from their soil to be directed against the other side.
Deputy Afghan foreign minister Ershad Ahmadi who visited Tehran recently issued a joint statement with the Iranian deputy foreign minister which calls for further cooperation between the two countries in various areas.

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific Affairs Abbas Araqchi quoted in the statement said, “A peaceful and stable Afghanistan can play an efficient role in the promotion of trade and the transit (of goods) between the two countries and in the region.”

Afghan and Iranian deputy foreign minister also emphasized the strengthening of and continuation of cooperation in combating terrorism and extremism and described the cultivation, production, and smuggling of illicit drugs as a serious problem.

Afghanistan shares a 900-kilometer common border with Iran, which is considered to be one of the main transit hub for drug smugglers destined for European, Arab and Central Asian countries.
