Ukrainian Muslims usher in Ramadan

9 Jul 2013 - 17:53

Ukrainian Muslims are preparing themselves to embrace the holy month of Ramadan. They believe Ramadan offers time for hope and reflection.
During the holy month, most Muslims fast from dawn to sunset with no food or water. They believe it’s a month of devotion and spiritual introspection; and the fasting purifies the soul and the body.

There are about 2 million Muslims in Ukraine. Those who are immigrant bring with them their own culture and create a remarkable atmosphere of Ramadan in Ukraine.

During the holy month, at sunset families and friends gather for Iftar which is the meal eaten by Muslims to break the fast. In Ukraine the Iftar menu is multicultural as all the communities are trying to present their culinary art.

A very long period of daylight makes Ukrainian Muslims wait for the sunset for up to 16 hours. But they believe this will give them more power to fast all days of the holy month of Ramadan.
