US continues to 'Steer Violence' amid world's fight against COVID-19: Iran

17 May 2020 - 17:25

Tasnim – Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesman slammed the US for continuing to “cause division” and “steer violence” globally as the world struggles to cope with the coronavirus crisis.

“While the world needs to get united in solidarity and unified in action against #COVID19 pandemic, the US continues to disrupt, distract and sabotage,” Seyed Abbas Mousavi tweeted late on Saturday.

In apparent references to Washington’s recent decisions to defund the World Health Organization and extend a UN arms ban on Iran, he added, “From West Asia to Latin America and from UNSC to WHO, the US causes division, steers violence and spoils multilateral institutions”.

US President Donald Trump said Saturday morning that he was considering restoring some funding to the WHO after the White House froze its contributions to the international agency last month despite widespread criticism from global leaders and Democrats in Congress who view the move as dangerous.

On Saturday, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo also threatened that Washington will "exact consequences" if the International Criminal Court (ICC) moves ahead with a potential war crimes investigation into Israel.

Pompeo's warning came after the ICC prosecutor decided to consider Palestine a state with the ability to submit complaints that could trigger probes into war crimes Israel committed in the occupied West Bank and the besieged Gaza Strip.
