No Iranian wants Gov’t to renegotiate with US: Official

10 Feb 2020 - 17:28

Tasnim – Head of Iran’s Plan and Budget Organization Mohammad Baqer Nobakht highlighted the US government’s non-commitment to its promises and agreements and said currently no Iranian wants Tehran to negotiate with Washington again.

“At some point in time, we experienced the negotiation with the US,” Nobakht said in a speech in the northern province of Golestan on Monday.

“We will do our job regardless of the enemy," he said, adding, “At one point in time, the (Iranian) Establishment decided to negotiate with the US, and we saw the result.”

“Today, no patriotic and wise Iranian national wants us to negotiate with the Americans again,” the official went on to say.

The remarks came against the backdrop of increased tensions between Iran and the US with Washington imposing new sanctions against the Islamic Republic.

The US has ratcheted up pressure on Iran since 2018 after withdrawing from the 2015 nuclear deal, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA).

Since then, the administration of US President Donald Trump is trying to reduce Iran’s oil exports to “zero,” and has sent an aircraft carrier strike group, a bomber squad, an amphibious assault ship, and a Patriot missile battery to the Middle East to try to stack up pressure on Tehran.

Iranian officials, however, have dismissed such moves as psychological warfare, saying the country has its own ways of circumventing the American bans and selling crude oil.
