Iranian elite student released after 13 months detention

5 Oct 2019 - 15:01

ISNA – Following Iranian Foreign Ministry’s attempts, an Iranian elite student illegally detained in Australia for 13 months has returned to Teheran after being released.

Reza Dehbashi, a PhD student at the University of Queensland in Brisbane, had been arrested in Australia for 13 on baseless allegations of “attempting to purchase and transfer advanced American military radar equipment via Dubai to Iran”.

The Australian judiciary had planned to extradite Dehbashi to the U.S. but that he was eventually released through Tehran’s diplomatic efforts.

Dehbashi had been working on a skin cancer detection device at the time of his arrest and that he had dismissed the charges as a misunderstanding and unfair.

News of his return came hours after Canberra said an Australian couple had flown home after being released by the Islamic republic.
