TEHRAN, Jun. 30 (MNA) – The Tehran Auction has sold out an entire collection for 65,450,000,000 rials (about $2 million) at the Parsian Azadi Hotel on Friday evening.
Eighty-two paintings, sculptures, and photos by 79 Iranian artists were offered during the second sale of the auction house.

An 80x90-centimeter oil painting from Sohrab Sepehri’s Tree-Trunk series took center stage on this year’s auction by fetching 7 billion rials (over $208,000), double the estimate of 3.5 billion rials.

Another of Sepehri’s oil paintings and a bronze sculpture from Parviz Tanavoli’s Heech series were sold for 56 billion rials (over $160,000).

The first auction was held in June 2012 when the auction house was established.

Among other highlights, a calligraphic painting by Mohammad Ehsaii sold for 4 billion rials, a calligraphic painting by Hossein Zenderudi fetched 3 billion rials and a painting by Reza Derakhshani earned 2.7 billion rials.

An untitled work by modernist painter Hossein Kazemi sold for 950 million rials, which was donated to the Charity Foundation for Special Diseases.

In addition, “The Crying Cow”, a photo by world-renowned auteur Abbas Kiarostami yielded 700 million rials.

The Tehran Auction Director Alireza Sami-Azar, who established the auction house in June 2012 to promote the economy of art in the country, said that the sale was beyond his expectation.

Speaking at the end of the auction he added, “I see in this extraordinary sale a great promise.”

“The robust sale shows that public has believed in the development of art and the fact that work of art is not simply a decorative object,” noted Sami-Azar, who was the former director of the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art.

The Tehran Auction earned over 2 billion rials during its first sale in June 2012.
