Pakistani minister of petroleum and natural resources says Islamabad is firmly committed to completing a multi-billion-dollar pipeline projected to carry natural gas from Iran to its eastern neighbor.
Shahid Khaqan Abbasi said on Tuesday that the new government will remove possible defects from the Iran-Pakistan gas agreement.

On June 20, Pakistan’s Foreign Office Spokesman Aizaz Ahmad Chaudhry said the gas pipeline is the key option to relieve energy shortages in Pakistan, adding that the Pakistani government will implement the project within the set timeframe.

The final construction phase of the pipeline was inaugurated by Iran’s President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and his Pakistani counterpart, Asif Ali Zardari, on March 11.

Iran-Pakistan (IP) gas pipeline will enable the export of 21.5 million cubic meters per day of Iranian natural gas to Pakistan.

Iran has already built 900 kilometers of the pipeline on its soil and is helping to build the 700-kilometer side of the pipeline on the Pakistani side.

The IP pipeline is designed to help Pakistan to overcome its growing energy needs at a time when the country of over 180 million people is grappling with serious energy shortages.

Earlier this month, Pakistani Federal Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal said the new Pakistani government will continue the joint gas pipeline project with Iran, saying the issue of energy is Islamabad’s top priority.
