16 Apr 2019 - 17:17

IRNA – Iran's Foreign Minister Javad Zarif said Tuesday that his visit to Damascus aims to coordinate regional policies and planning to advance Syrian talks for political solution after gaining victories on the ground.

The Iranian foreign minister heading a high-ranking political delegation arrived in Syria on Tuesday to follow up talks and consultations being regularly held between Iran and its neighbors, Syria and Turkey.

He said upon arriving in Damascus that recent developments in the region, particularly the hostile policies of the US after its failures on the ground and the political defeat of Washington and the Zionist regime in the region, including the illegitimate moves by Trump recognizing the illegal annexation of Golan Heights to the occupying regime, recognizing Quds as the capital of Israel, followed by the idiotic, illegal and unprecedented move of the Americans labeling Islamic Revolution Guard Corps (IRGC) a terror organization, necessitate regional efforts for further victories on the ground, coordination of policies of countries in the region, as well as drawing plan for advancing Syrian talks for a political solution in the wake of victories on the ground.

Zarif noted that talks between Iran and Syria on bilateral economic ties and in other spheres need to be pursued in the visit.

The Iranian foreign minister held talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, the country's Prime Minister Imad Khamis and Foreign Minister Walid al-Moalem.

The visit is being paid upon an official invitation by President Assad which was offered during his trip to Tehran in February.
