Zarif: Iran focusing on neighbors, traditional partners

4 Apr 2019 - 11:47

IRNA – Iran's Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said Iran has never invested any hope on Europeans and stressed that over the past few years Iran has had the biggest number of visits to neighboring countries which are its traditional partners like Russia, China, Turkey and Iraq.

He made remark while speaking in an interview with Khamenei.ir website held on the sidelines of the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei meeting with a group of governmental officials and ambassadors of Islamic countries to Tehran on Wednesday.

In answer to a question about Supreme Leader’s earlier remarks on Iran nuclear deal saying “Europe has left the JCPOA in practice”, Zarif said Europeans considered JCPOA as an achievement from the very beginning but they probably were not strong enough to stand by it and confront sanctions.

Definitely, Europe did not have enough capability to stand against US sanctions, Zarif added.

They made some attempts but as Supreme Leader said it was not enough and even in some cases these attempts indicated their unpreparedness to pay for what they claimed it had strategic importance for them, he noted.

Since the beginning of the Iranian incumbent government and especially after US withdrawal from Iran nuclear deal, more attention has been made to those countries which are standing by Iran in difficult situation.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Zarif promised pursuing Europe’s measures, warning and pressuring them to comply with their commitments.

Trump earlier announced on May 8, 2018, the withdrawal from the JCPOA, which was condemned by other parties to the 2015 agreement and their emphasis to stay in the landmark international deal.

Surprisingly, London also has prepared a set of especial rules to continue sanctions against Iran.

Despite the fact that UK parliament in its 2018 law on Brexit has completely changed all regulations into domestic ones, but the UK government has prepared a special document to change EU sanctions against Iran to its internal regulations.

The regulations in 52 pages and 78 chapters have been presented to UK parliament on March 7 and will be officially announced after UK withdrawal from EU.

Based on the document, ratification of the mentioned regulations have been aimed to enable UK to implement its sanctions against Iran efficiently after Brexit.
