Iranian speaker's advisor warns Washington to avoid repeating Syria's crisis in Venezuela

12 Feb 2019 - 14:55

FNA - Advisor to the Iranian Parliament Speaker Hossein Amir Abdollahian warned of Washington's plots to foment unrests and insecurity in Venezuela as it did in Syria in 2011.

"The White House wants to repeat the Syrian crisis in Latin America. Trump and the White House only think of their own interests," Amir Abdollahian said, addressing a number of Latin American academics and parliamentary officials in Tehran on Tuesday.

He described Maduro and Guaido as the sons of Venezuela, stressing the need for them to settle differences through internal talks instead of resorting to foreign intervention.

"Iran believes in political solution to all crises from Venezuela to Yemen, Bahrain, Libya and Syria," Amir Abdollahian said.

Recognizing Juan Guaido as the legitimate leader of the nation, US President Donald Trump confirmed that direct military involvement in Venezuela is “an option”.

Guaido, who proclaimed himself ‘interim president’ of Venezuela in January and got the immediate blessing of the United States and its allies in Europe and across Latin America, did not rule out that he might have to make a “controversial” decision to “authorize” a “humanitarian” intervention.

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro had stated that the National Armed Forces must be prepared to defend Venezuela after Guaido declared himself the nation's interim president, accusing Washington of orchestrating a coup in the Latin American country.
