China urges Iran, P5+1 to hold new round of talks ‘as soon as possible’

19 Jun 2013 - 13:19

China has called on Iran and the group of six major world powers of the P5+1 to hold another round of negotiations as soon as possible following the Islamic Republic’s presidential election.
During her weekly press conference on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said Beijing expects Iran and the P5+1 (Britain, China, France, Russia, and the US plus Germany) to continue dialog, urging both sides to hold a new round of negotiations “as soon as possible.”

Hua said Beijing would continue “constructive efforts” to facilitate talks over Iran’s nuclear energy program following Iran’s presidential poll.

Iran’s President-elect Hojjatoleslam Hassan Rohani emerged victorious in the presidential election of June 14, which was marked by a high voter turnout, winning 50.7 percent of a total of 36,704,156 ballots counted.
Hua described dialog as the only way to reach a “long-term and proper resolution” of the Western impasse over Iran’s nuclear energy program.
The Chinese official expressed hope that Iran and the P5+1 would settle their differences over the issue and find “practical and feasible resolutions.”

Iran and the P5+1 have held several rounds of talks on a range of issues, with the main focus being on Iran's nuclear energy program.

The two sides wrapped up their latest round of negotiations on April 6 in the Kazakh city of Almaty. An earlier meeting had been held in Almaty on February 26-27.

The US, the Israeli regime and some of their allies falsely claim that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with Washington and the European Union using the unfounded claim as a pretext to impose illegal sanctions on Iran.

Tehran strongly rejects the allegation over its nuclear energy activities, maintaining that as a committed signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
