US sanction threat breaches Amity deal, ICJ ruling: Iran UN envoy

27 Oct 2018 - 15:00

Press TV - Iran’s United Nations envoy says the United States’ threat of imposing more sanctions on the Islamic Republic violates both the Amity pact between the countries and a UN court ruling against Washington.

Gholam-Ali Khoshroo made the remarks to IRNA on Saturday.

The 1955 Treaty of Amity established economic relations and consular rights between Tehran and Washington. On October 3, the International Court of Justice (ICJ) ordered Washington to lift sanctions it had imposed back in May targeting humanitarian trade, food, medicine, and civil aviation.

Khoshroo said the US faced a restraining order, issued by the court until the decree was finalized, that obliged it to “strictly refrain from taking any measures that could exacerbate the situation.”

This is while Washington has said it would slap more sanctions against Iran targeting its energy sector, including oil sales.

“As you know, the court is the most important legal pillar of the United Nations, and all countries should observe its rulings in line with the UN Charter,” Khoshroo noted.

“The US, which hosts the UN on its soil and is a permanent member of the UN Security Council practically disregards the court’s rulings and even issues threats,” the envoy said.

“What is worse is that the US has said it does not credit any ruling issued by the court or any litigation at the tribunal in the future, considering it incompetent in whatever legal proceedings,” he said.

The remarks came a day after ICJ Judge Abdulqawi Ahmed Yusuf detailed the restraining order facing Washington in a report to the UN General Assembly.

The US started imposing the bans on Iran after unilaterally leaving the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), a multilateral nuclear treaty between Tehran and Washington.
