43 ancient coins discovered in SW Iran

IRNA – The protection unit of the Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization of Khuzestan Province confiscated 43 coins dating back to Elymais period.

Commander of the protection unit, Brigadier-General Amir Rahmatollahi said that the body together with Behbahan police started investigation into those involved in smuggling historical properties.

During the operation two suspects were arrested and 43 coins were confiscated, he added.

Elymais was a semi-independent state of the 2nd century BC to the early 3rd century AD, frequently a vassal under Parthian control, and located at the head of the Persian Gulf in the present-day region of Khuzestan, Iran (Susiana).
