Sanctions against Iran airliner meant as warning: Washington

16 Sep 2018 - 15:09

IRNA - The Spokesperson for the United States Department of State, repeating anti-Iranian remarks, has said the US Treasury Department's move to blacklist the Iranian airliner Mahan Air is a warning.

'This @USTreasury action is a warning,' Heather Nauert wrote in a tweet on Saturday.

Mahan Airlines, operating under the name Mahan Air is a privately-owned Iranian airline based in Tehran, Iran. It operates scheduled domestic services and international flights to the Far East, Middle East, Central Asia, and Europe.

Nauert alleged that the Iranian airliner is used to supply fighters and weapons to help Bashar Assad's government, saying the aviation industry should not cash in on terrorism.

'Aviation industry should not profit from terrorism,' she wrote.

Iran is one of the countries in the region that has been helping the Syrian legitimate government to eradicate terrorism in the country. The Iranian military advisors have been involved in the crisis in Syria based on a formal request by Damascus.

The United States has also imposed sanctions against a Thai aviation company and Malaysia-based Mahan Travel and Tourism.

Following Washington's May 8 pulling out of the Iran nuclear deal known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), the US established a 90-day and a 180-day wind-down period for other countries before it starts reimposing sanctions on Tehran on November 4.

It is noteworthy that upon the United States' withdrawal, dozens of licenses to sell Boeing and Airbus passenger jets to Iran have been revoked.
