1 Sep 2018 - 11:15

IRNA – Syrian Foreign Minister Walid al-Muallem said on Friday that his country is determined to boost military cooperation with Iran.

Al-Muallem who arrived in Russia on Thursday for talks with his counterpart Sergey Lavrov told reporters that Islamic Republic of Iran is a major partner and friendly country for Syria.

Noting that Iran played a major role in fighting terrorism in Syria, he pointed out that Iran’s military advisors played a crucial role in fighting terrorists, as they stood alongside the country’s army.

“It is logical for both countries to sign agreements on military cooperation to pave the way for interaction between them,” he said.

The defense ministries of Iran and Syria signed a document on mutual defense cooperation in the presence of the two countries' defense ministers in Damascus late on Sunday.

The document was signed by Iranian Minister of Defense and Armed Forces Logistics Brigadier General Amir Hatami and his Syrian counterpart General Ali Ayoub after their negotiations on issues of mutual interest in the Syrian capital city.
