Iran's interests secured in Caspian Sea Convention: MP

15 Aug 2018 - 12:47

IRNA – The interests of Iran have been respected in the convention of legal status of the Caspian Sea and Iran's share won't be traded, said the speaker of the National Security and Foreign Policy committee of Majlis (Iranian Parliament) on Wednesday.

'Arguments made against the convention of legal status of the Caspian Sea are just the result of some media hype,' said Ali Najafi-Khoshroo.

'The littoral countries of the Caspian Sea have signed different documents pertaining to the Sea but because the Caspian Sea Legal Regime has been a controversial issue, it is still unsolved,' Najafi-Khoshroo said.

Saying that the framework of the Caspian Sea Legal Regime was agreed a few months ago in the foreign ministers' meeting, Khoshroo emphasized, 'Iran's share will never be traded.'

'The legal regime of the Caspian Sea takes into consideration the interests of all the littoral countries, including Iran,' he added.

The Caspian Legal Regime Convention does not specify the limits of the Sea bed and sub-Seabed, which it should be dealt with later, he said.

The convention was signed on August 12 by the presidents of the five littoral countries of the Caspian Sea in Kazakhstan.
