Incomplete disarmament of US WMDs threatens intl. security

12 Jul 2018 - 12:51

MNA – Iran’s Permanent Representative to Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) expressed regret over incomplete disarmament of the United States’ weapons of mass destruction (WMD), saying that this is a threat to international peace and security.

Addressing the 88th Executive Council session of the OPCW, Alireza Jahangiri highlighted the role of terrorist groups in using chemical weapons.

Instead of playing their role in fight against terrorism, some countries are trying to neglect positive and appreciable efforts of the Syrian government regarding destructions of chemical weapons, he added.

Elsewhere in his remarks, Jahangiri said that new mechanisms allocated to assign blame for chemical attacks prepares the ground for further disagreements and warned of its dangerous effects.

The new mechanism was passed by the OPCW with votes from less than half of the member states, he said.

This move turns OPCW, which is a specialized organization, into a political body, he added.

Jahangiri also invited all member states of OPCW to participate in Tehran’s October conference on the medical aspects of aid and support against chemical attacks.
