Iran parliament considering bill on nuclear talks with EU

1 Jun 2018 - 22:21

IRNA – Iranian lawmakers have submitted a double-urgency bill to the Presiding Board of Majlis (parliament) on the nuclear talks with the EU.

he double-urgency bill on requirements of nuclear talks with the European Union countries is complementary to the bill on reciprocal measures against US anti-Iran moves, Chairman of Majlis Nuclear Committee Mojtaba Zonnouri said on Friday.

Zonnouri said that the bill was prepared following the US withdrawal from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) reached between Iran and G5+1 (US, UK, Russia, China, France plus Germany) in 2015.

The lawmaker had said earlier in May that Majlis is considering a bill according to which the Iranian government will be charged with following the rules to adopt reciprocal and proportional measures to deal with the US anti-Iran actions.

According to the bill, the Iranian government has to ask for reliable guarantees from the Europeans and the members of the P5+1 group of nations, except for the United States, Zonnouri said.

The move by Majlis is in response to the May 8 decision made by US President Donald Trump to leave the July 2015 nuclear deal, he added.

The European guarantees should be full and comprehensive, and the talks with the European countries should not last for over a month, the parliamentarian said.

Zonnouri went on to say that according to the bill if the Europeans failed to provide Iran with guarantees or violated it after offering, the Iranian government will start the full fuel cycle.

In the bill, he said, the parliament has given task to the government to raise the level of uranium enrichment to over 190,000 SWU if the Europeans did not provide reliable guarantees.
