UN Chief urges thorough investigation into Douma attack

11 Apr 2018 - 15:34

IRNA – Based on reports released on alleged use of chemical weapons in Douma, Syria, the United Nations Secretary General said it needs unbiased, independent and professional probing.

“I am outraged by the recent reports of use of chemical weapons in Syria. They require a thorough investigation by the [Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons] OPCW, without any restrictions or impediments. I encourage the Security Council to redouble its efforts to agree upon a dedicated mechanism for accountability,” António Guterres said Tuesday in a Twitter message.

The media affiliated with the terrorists had claimed that the Syrian jet fighters conducted a chemical attack on Douma Saturday night, killing 75 people and injuring scores of others.

The Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is scheduled to dispatch a fact-finding team to probe into alleged chemical attacks in Douma.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov earlier called on OPCW experts to review chemical attack in Douma, Syria. OPCW experts should attend the accident site to collect specimens for a detailed report, Lavrov said.

Russia will support OPCW experts, Lavrov reiterated.

Meanwhile, Syrian Foreign Ministry has invited OPCW to send a fact-finding team to Douma.
