US seeks to buy time in dealings with Iran, esp. nuclear talks: Rezaei

26 May 2013 - 12:42

Iranian presidential candidate Mohsen Rezaei says the United States is trying to buy time in its dealings with Iran, especially in the talks over Iran’s nuclear energy program.
Speaking live on national television, the candidate also said he would bring about fundamental changes and reforms to the way the government is run if he is elected president.

Rezaei further touched upon his economic and development plans for the country, adding he would try to transform Iran’s farming and agricultural sector first.

Iran currently enjoys a strong and powerful position in the region as well as on the international stage, Rezaei noted.

He said the next government should work hard to settle the public’s economic hardships.

On Tuesday, the Iranian Interior Ministry announced the list of candidates approved by the Guardian Council to run in the country’s 11th presidential election.

In addition to Rezaei who is the incumbent Expediency Council Secretary, the other political figures approved by the Guardian Council are MP Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel, former Foreign Minister Ali-Akbar Velayati, Supreme National Security Council Secretary Saeed Jalili, Hassan Rohani, the director of the Strategic Research Center of the Expediency Council, former First Vice President Mohammad-Reza Aref, Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, and former Telecommunications Minister Mohammad Gharazi. The eight candidates were approved after a 10-day vetting process.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election, and the Guardian Council vets the candidates.

Iranians go to the polls in the nation’s 11th presidential election on June 14. Over 66,000 polling stations will be set up across the country. Expatriates will also be able to cast ballots at 285 polling stations that will be set up in foreign countries.
