Iranian Speaker's Advisor: US policies impeding elections in Syria

17 Feb 2018 - 14:28

FNA- Advisor to the Iranian Parliament Speaker Hossein Amir Abdollahian blasted certain countries' negative role in the Syrian developments, warning that Washington's policies and moves are preventing preliminary steps towards elections in Syria.

"The US, Britain and certain countries have not played a constructive role in the Syrian developments process," Amir Abdollahian said on Saturday.

"If the Americans stop troubling the (peace) talks, a political solution can be found in Syria, the problem of refugees will be resolved and elections will be held in the country without any serious opposition," he added.

Amir Abdollahian said Washington's outlook entails a weak and dependent Syria along the border with Israel, and added, "The Americans are after a weakened Syria in the region and they will not enter the process of finding a political solution actively as long as they do not rest assured of this issue."

He also voiced regret that the Saudis are also moving in the direction of the US and Israel's goals against the region with their incorrect analyses and hasty decisions.

His remarks came as many regional officials and analysts have warned of the US plots to disintegrate Syria.

In relevant comments earlier this month, Abdel Bari Atwan, the editor-in-chief of Rai al-Youm newspaper, cautioned the US plots to disintegrate Syria and establish military bases on the Eastern banks of the Euphrates with the help of the Kurds.

Atwan referred to the US airstrikes against the Syrian army forces in Deir Ezzur and killing 150 Syrian forces, stressing that the country's foreign ministry is entitled to consider it as war crime as the American forces entered Iraq and Syria on the pretext of fighting terrorism.

"Now that terrorist groups are annihilated in Iraq and Syria, we should ask the reason for the US forces' deployment in the two countries and their goal of airstrikes against them," he wrote on Saturday.

"The response to this question is simple; implementation of the US plots to disintegrate Syria and set up permanent military bases in Eastern Euphrates to separate it from the west so that these bases will replace Incirlik airbase in Turkey, which doesn’t welcome the US fighter jets anymore, and pave the ground for the formation of a Kurdish government.

The US-led coalition admitted that it has launched airstrikes against the Syrian government forces after they attacked the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) base in Eastern Euphrates.

According to Atwan, this measure indicates the US willingness to form an independent Kurdish government in Eastern Euphrates to separate it from Syria, support it and form an army of 30,000 soldiers to train and equip them with new weapons.
