20 Jan 2018 - 13:22

IRNA - The city of Sumar in western Iran has so far been rocked by 336 quakes since Jan 11, Head of Kermanshah seismological center said.

The mentioned tremors started on Jan 11 at 10:30 hours local time (7:00 GMT) and the last one happened today at 10 AM (6:30 GMT),” Farhad Forouzi told the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA).

“From among the 336 earthquakes, 23 measured over 4 magnitude on the Richter scale, 7 were more than 5 Richter and 16 others were between 4 and 5 Richter,” he said.

Forouzi rejected possibility of tremors with over 5.5 magnitude on the Richter scale in Sumar, while adding that the area will be prone to shocks for one month.

Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust and is prone to frequent earthquakes.

Western province of Kermanshah has been jolted by several earthquakes since November 12, 2017 when a 7.3 magnitude earthquake hit the provincial city of Ezgeleh region killing at least 620 people and injuring over 12,000.
