Trump's Al Quds decision 'disasterous mistake': Ex Iranian diplomat

12 Dec 2017 - 16:49

IRNA – The move by US President Donald Trump administration in recognizing the occupied holy Al Quds (Jerusalem) as the capital of the Zionist regime constituted a “historical, strategic, disaster mistake,” said a former Iranian diplomat.

Trump's December 3 decision was a “clear violation of all UN resolutions,” Hossein Mousavian told a panel held recently by Turkish Heritage Organization at the BAU International University in Washington.

The move has effectively killed the peace process, Mousavian told the panel discussing the crisis in Syria titled “Old Rivalries, New Dynamics”.

Many of the current crises in the region have been triggered by the US’ over-involvement, said the Middle East security and nuclear policy specialist at Princeton University, citing examples such as the invasion of Iraq and the intervention in Libya.

Mousavian welcomed the trilateral cooperation between Iran, Russia and Turkey to initiate and hold the Astana process, saying that decimation of Daesh (ISIS) terrorist in Syria and Iraq was the outcome of the joint efforts by these three nations.

The trilateral cooperation should continue, he said adding that a greater number of countries, including the US should join in.

He also said that conflict and crisis management in the region cannot be effectively carried out without the involvement of the US and Saudi Arabia.
