IRNA – Iran participated in the 7th meeting of the United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) which started work in the UN office at Vienna on Monday.

The event was held with the attendance of Iran's Justice Minister Alireza Avaei and Iran's Ambassador and Permanent Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Reza Najafi.

The United Nations Convention against Corruption (UNCAC) is a multilateral treaty negotiated by member-states of the United Nations (UN) and promoted by the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC). It is one of several legally binding international anti-corruption agreements. UNCAC requires state parties to the treaty to implement several anti-corruption measures that focus on five main areas: prevention, law enforcement, international cooperation, asset recovery, and technical assistance and information exchange.

Najafi is scheduled to deliver speech on behalf of Group of 77 (G77) and China.

The Convention covers five main areas: preventive measures, criminalization and law enforcement, international cooperation, asset recovery, technical assistance and information exchange. The Convention covers many different forms of corruption, such as bribery, trading in influence, abuse of functions, and various acts of corruption in the private sector.

Iran signed UNCAC on December 9, 2003 and Iranian parliament (Majlis) ratified it on June 11, 2006.
