Coalition of three to name candidate after vetting process

9 May 2013 - 22:33

Iran’s presidential hopeful Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel says the Coalition of Three will not nominate its candidate until the Guardian Council announces the results of the vetting process for the presidential hopefuls, Press TV reports.
“The three of us will register. But it is yet not clear when exactly we will announce the result [on the designated nominee]. However, the announcement will not take place before the Guardian Council declares its decision,” Haddad-Adel told reporters on the sidelines of the 26th edition of Tehran’s International Book Fair.

Haddad Adel, who is also a member of Iran’s Majlis, is on the coalition’s list along with Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, the Mayor of Tehran and Ali-Akbar Velayati, a senior advisor to Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei.

Registration of hopefuls for Iran’s 11th presidential election officially began on Tuesday morning. Hopefuls have until May 11 to sign up.

So far, some 240 people have registered for the race.

The president of Iran is elected for a four-year term in a national election. The Guardian Council vets the hopefuls and will publish the final list of candidates later this month.
