Ministry: Iran's deterrent power has roots in 8-year war

22 Sep 2017 - 18:23

IRNA – Iran's Ministry of Defense said on Friday that the country's might and exemplary deterrent power have roots in lessons from the eight-year war (1980-88) imposed on Iran by former Ba'ath regime of Iraq.

Although September 22, 1980, was the beginning of a brutal and proxy war of former Ba'ath regime of Saddam Hussein, it turned into a shining point in the Iranian history, demonstrating national determination of the Iranian people in foiling the evil plots of the global arrogance, the Defense Ministry said in a statement issued on the occasion of the 37th anniversary of the beginning of Iraqi invasion of Iran – commemorated across the country as `Sacred Defense' Week.

'As Supreme Leader and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces Ayatollah Khamenei said, the eight-year war made us stronger,' the statement added.

The statement noted that all the country's defensive achievements, including development of defense systems in different areas of land, air and marine wars, as well as electronic, aerospace and missile industries are among the outcomes of Sacred Defense (Iraqi-imposed war).
