Iran envoy lauds Kuwait’s push for regional detente

28 Aug 2017 - 16:16

Tasnim – Iran’s ambassador to Kuwait praised the Arab country for its “balanced policy” toward regional conflicts, highlighting the efforts the emirate has made to prevent the escalation of tensions by encouraging dialogue.

In an interview with Al-Kawthar TV, Alireza Enayati hailed Kuwait for its efforts to broker regional detente and for its balanced policy on various regional issues such as the crises in Yemen, Syria and Iraq.

Despite its inclusion in a Saudi-led military coalition against Yemen, Kuwait has proposed the idea of Yemeni-Yemeni talks and even undertook to host peace negotiations among Yemeni groups, the envoy noted.

He also admired Kuwait for its “remarkable efforts” to settle the diplomatic conflict between Qatar and several other members of the Persian Gulf Cooperation Council (PGCC), saying those attempts could ease the tensions and mark a great success for Kuwait.

The ambassador then pointed to Kuwait’s leading role in a message from six PGCC members on their willingness to boost relations with Iran and clear up misunderstandings via dialogue and negotiations.

What matters for Iran is putting the ideas in that message into practice, Enayati added, saying Tehran supports prevailing dialogue among regional countries.

In January, Foreign Minister of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al Khalid Al Sabah paid a visit to Tehran to relay a message from the Kuwaiti emir to Iranian President Hassan Rouhani.

Later in February, the Iranian president took a tour of Oman and Kuwait in response to the message from the PGCC for closer ties with Tehran via dialogue.

Iran and Kuwait have developed closer political relations in recent years, and have held several sessions of a Joint Political Committee.
