Tal Afar liberation marks end of Daesh in Iraq: Iranian official

28 Aug 2017 - 11:20

Tasnim – An adviser to Iran’s parliament speaker hailed Iraq’s success to recapture the city of Tal Afar from Daesh (ISIL or ISIS) terrorists as a victory marking the removal of the Takfiri group from the Arab country.

In a post on his Twitter account on Sunday, Hossein Amir Abdollahian congratulated the Iraqi government, nation, armed forces, religious authorities and voluntary fighters on the victory against Daesh terrorist group.

The liberation of Tal Afar means the termination of Daesh in a stable and safe Iraq, Amir Abdollahian, also a former deputy foreign minister for Arab and African affairs added.

On Sunday, Iraqi forces drove Daesh terrorists from Tal Afar, clearing one of the Takfiri group’s few remaining strongholds in the country.

The recapture came just one week into the battle for Tal Afar, which once served as a way station between the terrorist group’s de facto capitals Mosul and Raqqah.

Tal Afar, which had a pre-war population of about 200,000, was the latest objective in the war on Daesh following the recapture of Mosul after a nine-month campaign that left much of the city, the biggest in northern Iraq, in ruins.
