Domestic car production rises in post-JCPOA era: Iran

9 May 2017 - 19:35

May 9, The Iran Project – After the implementation of the JCPOA (also known as Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action), Iran’s domestic car production has been doubled, says the secretary of the Iranian auto-parts makers union.

Speaking to a reporter on Tuesday, Arash Mohebbinejad said during the sanctions years when Iran has no relation with the foreign automakers, the country’s car production was dropped form one million and 630 thousand sets of cars to 730.000 sets.

But, in the post-JCPOA era, Iran’s domestic car production has been doubled to about one million and 350 thousand sets of cars, Mohebbinejad noted.

As a tangible outcome of the post-sanctions era, last year, Iran Khodro and French auto giant Peugeot signed an agreement that led to the formation of a joint venture named IKCO-Peugeot Joint Venture (IKIAP).

Thereby, last week, the French company officially started the mass production of Peugeot 2008 subcompact SUVs in the central site of Iran Khodro Industrial Group (IKCO) in capital Tehran in a ceremony attended by the country’s President Hassan Rouhani.

Maintaining the current trend in the automotive industry, and producing the world’s new and updates cars in the country can help us reach the goals set in  Iran's 1404 (March 2025-March 2026) Outlook Plan, the Iranian official stressed.

Iran and the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council - the United States, France, Britain, Russia and China plus Germany - signed the landmark nuclear agreement on July 14, 2015 and started implementing it on January 16, 2016.

Under the nuclear agreement, Iran undertook to put limitations on its nuclear program in exchange for the removal of nuclear-related sanctions imposed against the country.
