Modern Iran meaningless if women being ignored: UN official

12 Mar 2017 - 12:54

IRNA – Director of the United Nations Information Center (UNIC) in Tehran Maria Dotsenko stressed on Saturday the importance of women’s presence in societies, saying modern Iran will become meaningfull with women’s role.

It is too difficult to think about modern Iran without women’s role, Dotsenko said while addressing the opening ceremony on “Iran’s Women”, a photo exhibition in Tehran.

“Iran’s Women” is an exhibition that has been jointly organized by the Vice-Presidency for Women and Family Affairs and the Islamic Republic News Agency (IRNA). It displays 80 photos taken by IRNA’s photojournalists for a week at Milad Tower in west of Tehran.

At the Saturday ceremony, the UN official expressed her pleasure over cooperating with the IRNA journalists, the female reporters in particular.

She further read out the message of the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres released on the occasion of the International Women’s Day on March 8.

“Women’s rights are human rights. But in these troubled times, as our world becomes more unpredictable and chaotic, the rights of women and girls are being reduced, restricted and reversed.

“Around the world, tradition, cultural values and religion are being misused to curtail women’s rights, to entrench sexism and defend misogynistic practices,” the UN chief has underlined in his message.
