Rouhani’s regional trip great opportunity to end anti-Iranian policies

19 Feb 2017 - 15:11

February 19, The Iran Project – The visit by the Iranian President Hassan Rouhani to the regional countries of Oman and Kuwait is a great opportunity for ending anti-Iranian policies, said former Iranian ambassador to Jordan and Lebanon.

After Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah al-Khalid al-Hamad Al Sabah traveled to Tehran on January 25, seeking to fix ties with Tehran, which began to deteriorate last year amid the confrontational approach taken by the new Saudi rulers against Tehran, President Hassan Rouhani began a one-day visit to Oman and Kuwait on Feb. 15 to boost mutual friendliness.

Ahmad Dastmalchian, former Iranian ambassador to Jordan and Lebanon, praised Rouhani’s visit to the two Persian Gulf countries, calling it an intelligent measure that can affect regional diplomacy and open a new window for the regional countries.

Saudi Arabia, concerned by Iran’s influence in the region, tried to weaken Iran’s position, Dastmalchian noted, stressing that but the recent visit of Kuwaiti Foreign Minister to Tehran, bearing the massage of Persian Gulf littoral states seeking to fix ties with Iran, and Rouhani’s visit to Oman and Kuwait can reduce regional tensions.

He went on to say that seemingly, Iran intends to welcome Kuwait’s proposal to create “collective security cooperation” among Iran, the regional states and Russia, solving regional problems without foreign intervention.
