A senior Iranian Foreign Ministry official has expressed hope that Western powers would favor diplomacy by recognizing the county’s right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
We hope that Western countries will take a constructive step in the path of confidence-building by recognizing our country’s right to uranium enrichment, IRNA cited Seyyed Abbas Araqchi as saying on Wednesday.

The Iranian official made the call during a meeting with his Australian counterpart, Paul Grigson, in Tehran.

Reviewing the outcome of the latest round of negotiations between Tehran and the P5+1 group, Araqchi highlighted the country’s nuclear rights under international law.

Grigson, for his part, called for the resolution of the West’s dispute with Iran over its nuclear energy program through dialogue and diplomatic channels.

Tehran and the P5+1 (Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States, and Germany) have held several rounds of talks mainly over Iran’s nuclear energy program. The two sides wrapped up their latest round of negotiations on April 6 in Almaty, Kazakhstan.

Following the talks, Tehran said it that provided a comprehensive operational plan to the P5+1 group and that it was now up to the group to decide on how to respond to the Iranian proposals.

European Union foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, who represents the group of six powers, said the two sides “remain far apart on the substance” of the talks.

However, she added, “Indeed, we have talked in much greater detail than ever before, and our efforts will continue in that direction.”

The US, Israel and some of their allies claim that Iran is pursuing non-civilian objectives in its nuclear energy program, with the US and the European Union using the false claim as a pretext to impose illegal sanctions against Iran.

Iran rejects the allegations, arguing that as a committed signatory to the nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) and a member of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), it has the right to use nuclear technology for peaceful purposes.
