Iran’s Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi says the Islamic Republic has always played an effective role in assisting the United Nations in the settlement of regional problems.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran has always played an effective role in helping the UN resolve regional issues and problems and carry out its heavy duties,” Salehi said in a meeting with UN Resident Coordinator Gary Lewis on Saturday.

The Iranian foreign minister added that Iran has always attached great significance to cooperation with the international body as one of its active member states and because of the importance and sensitivity of the developments in the region.

Lewis, for his part, assured Salehi that, “Iran can count on the role of the United Nations’ agencies, funds and programs on the ground, to work in partnership - and with transparency, impartiality and respect - to deliver on mutually-agreed development goals.”
“It is important for the international community to recognize the progress which the Islamic Republic has made in attaining - and even exceeding - several of the Millennium Development Goals, such as those relating to the increase in the education of girls and the reduction of maternal mortality,” Lewis added.
The UN official also expressed condolences over the recent earthquake in southern Iran, which led to the death of at least 37 people and the injury of 1,050 others.

The earthquake, measuring 6.1 on the Richter scale, hit the town of Kaki, some 90 kilometers southeast of Bushehr, on April 9, at a depth of 12 kilometers. It was followed by many aftershocks, which also jolted the nearby town of Khour-Mowj.
