December 24, The Iran Project – Iranian Parliamentarians have condemned a recent UN General Assembly resolution on the state of human rights in Iran, calling the United Nation to reconsider its dual policy towards the Islamic Republic.

Iranian Members of Parliament made the remarks in reaction to the adoption of UN General Assembly’s 63rd resolution on Monday about human rights violation in the country which was presented by Canada.

Speaking to a reporter on Saturday, Alireza Rahimi, a member of the foreign policy and national security commission said both countries and international organizations should not have double standards on human rights and evaluating the performance of other countries.

Canada’s measure to propose the UN resolution against Iran has had a negative impact on the two countries’ bilateral relations and will definitely affect Iran’s view on reopening the Canadian embassy in Tehran, the Iranian lawmaker added.

In reaction to the UN human rights bill on Iran, Mohammad Reza Amir Hasankhani also stressed that the resolution was because of Iran’s success in developing the landmark bill of rights, guaranteeing freedom of speech, protest, fair trials and privacy.

Mohammad Javad Abtahi, Iranian legislator, referred to Canada’s anti-Iran measures, saying that we should take a proper stance against Canada, otherwise other countries will act against us in the near future.

By a vote of 85 to 35 with 63 abstentions, the United Nations General Assembly on Monday approved a resolution criticizing Iran’s human rights record.

Canada was the main sponsor of the resolution, with the United States and the European Union being co-sponsors.
