Iranian government seeking to create better lives for persons with disabilities

3 Dec 2016 - 13:17

IRNA – President Hassan Rouhani wrote in his Instagram page on Saturday that his government has managed to review the ' Comprehensive Law on Protection of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities' to provide equal opportunities and fair lives for them.

President Rouhani made the remarks on the occasion of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities on Dec 3.

Touching upon the measures adopted for supporting the persons with disabilities, President Rouhani added the Ministry of Cooperatives, Labour and Socail Welfare also has been managed to provide housing for families with two disabled people.

President Rouhani underscored that the Iranian government also has put genetic screening on its agenda to prevent a myriad of disabilities.

On June 2016, Head of the State Welfare Organization Anoushiravan Mohseni Bandpei said Genetic testing before marriage has been made mandatory in the next economic development plan (2016-2021).

Genetic screening before marriage will help identify potential genetic disorders in the next generation, and therefore prevent a myriad of disabilities.

The costs of genetic testing will be paid by the SWO if a family cannot afford to pay. Marriages among relatives also require genetic testing.
