Commander says IRGC navy’s parade sign of Iran’s rising sea-based power

22 Sep 2016 - 11:31

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Commander of the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps Navy Rear Admiral Ali Fadavi said his forces’ military parade in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas on Wednesday signified an increase in the country’s sea-based “defensive and offensive power”.

Speaking to reporters in Bandar Abbas on the sidelines of the large-scale military parade of the IRGC Navy on Wednesday, Fadavi said about 450 vessels from the IRGC, the Iranian Army as well as local and popular forces participated in the maritime parade.

He further emphasized that a large number of the IRGC's missile-launcher vessels, including Ashura, Zolfaqar and Tareq, were put on display in the military event held on the occasion of the Sacred Defense Week, which marks the onset of the Iraqi imposed war on Iran 36 years ago.

The maritime parade had a political message, the commander said, adding that given the US sea-based threats against the Islamic Republic in recent years, the IRGC Navy forces showcased a small part of their defensive and offensive power in today’s parade.

Every year, in late September, the Iranian Armed Forces attend parades to honor the Sacred Defense Week in remembrance of the martyrs in the eight-year war imposed by Iraq in the 1980s.

The most recent achievements of the Iranian armed forces in missile industry, equipment for the ground, naval and air defense forces as well as communication gear were put on display in the military events.
