Iran to keep holding drills in Persian Gulf: Navy commander

22 Sep 2016 - 10:51

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari said the country will continue to stage war games in the Persian Gulf waters.

“We will combat any threat, consider the Persian Gulf as our own home and will hold both war games and parades at our home,” the Navy commander said on Wednesday, speaking on the sidelines of a large-scale military parade in the southern port city of Bandar Abbas.

Sayyari also unveiled plans for the production of new military vessels equipped with missile-launchers by the Navy’s experts, adding that the homegrown Sahand destroyer will come into service soon.

Sahand is the third destroyer manufactured as part of the Mowj (Wave) project in Iran. Its predecessors, Jamaran and Damavand, are currently in service and employed in naval missions in international waters.

Iranian military experts and technicians have in recent years made great headways in manufacturing a broad range of indigenous equipment, making the armed forces self-sufficient in the arms sphere.
