Theresa May to meet Iranian president Hassan Rouhani at UN summit

20 Sep 2016 - 22:50

Theresa May is to meet Iranian president Hassan Rouhani at the UN refugee summit in New York.

Details about the meeting between the two leaders have not yet been released.

Iran reached a deal with Britain, along with Russia, the US, France, Germany and China, last July, which saw international sanctions on the country lifted after it agreed to curb its nuclear programme.

The deal placed restrictions of the sort of nuclear reactor it could develop, but did not require it to halt its use of nuclear energy entirely.

Both May and Rouhani are among the world leaders attending the UN summit in New York.

Tonight's meeting comes following the jailing of British-Iranian mother Nazanin Zaghari-Ratcliffe, who was sentenced to five years in prison in Iran earlier this month.

The 37-year-old mother, from Hampstead in north London, was accused of plotting to overthrow the Iranian regime.

According to her husband, Richard Ratcliffe, she was sentenced on charges that "remain secret".
