Iran, Italy sign MoU on opening ME’s PoP in Tehran

8 Sep 2016 - 12:38

TEHRAN, Sep. 07 (MNA) – Iran’s Telecommunication Infrastructure Company and Italy’s leading global operator ‘Sparkle’ signed an MoU to establish a Middle East Point of Presence (PoP) in Tehran.

The agreement was signed Tuesday on the sidelines of Iran Connect 2016between deputy ICT minister and head of Iran’s Telecommunication Infrastructure Company, Mohammad Javad Azari Jahromi, and Alessandro Talotta, Chairman of Italy’s Sparkle, a leading global telecommunication service provider.

Under the agreement, Sparkle will open a Middle East Point of Presence (PoP) in Tehran for Content Delivery Networks (CDN). This will be the fourth PoP of the Middle East after the ones already established in the UAE, Oman and Turkey.

Azari Jahrami maintained that the MoU followed an earlier agreement reached with the Italian side during President Rouhani and ICT Minister Mahmoud Alavi’s visit to the European country.

“The opening of an international PoP in Tehran, will introduce Iran as an international service provider center in the region,” he explained. “Instead of having the regional countries’ transit routes go through Europe, they will be managed here in Tehran, and this will considerably increase quality and lower internet costs for international internet service providers.”

He went on to add, “the establishment of the PoP in Tehran will be the first step toward Iran’s plan for becoming an international hub in the region.”
