Iran’s civil defense organization says ready to cooperate with UN in humanitarian affairs

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – Head of Iran’s Civil Defense Organization Brigadier General Gholam Reza Jalali announced that the organization is ready to boost cooperation with the United Nations in various humanitarian affairs.

Speaking in a recent meeting with UN Under-Secretary General for Humanitarian Affairs Stephen O'Brien in Tehran, Jalali underlined that Iran welcomes the UN’s non-political stance aiming to merely save the lives of humans in the face of natural disasters.

“We are prepared to take mutual measures in the exchange of experiences and in the field of education in a bid to provide some help in the areas,” he noted.

“We have good experience from the years of Sacred Defense (the 1980-1988 Iraqi imposed war on Iran) when we were attacked by Saddam (Hussein) and some parts of our country were occupied,” the official said.

“At that time, we had to provide emergency accommodation for the (displaced) people in new cities,” he added.

In Iran, the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war is known as the Sacred Defense, which is commemorated each year on the anniversary of the beginning of the war.

Sacred Defense Week begins on Shahrivar 31 in the Iranian calendar (September 22 this year), which is the day Iraq invaded Iran and began the imposed war on the country in 1980.
